hey karol,

I agree this recipe isn't chili-competition-winning material, even if it is a good start. but I don't know if it's the lentils that keep it from greatness--more likely the lack of risk it takes. thanks for the kick in the pants, and I'll definitely post a few more chili recipes that are a little more daring before all is said and done.

either way, your chili looks amazing, and I'll definitely give it a whirl at the co-op. I'm just jealous I won't get that awesome trophy at the end of the night.

i know this recipe well, as i first discovered it in 2002. i believe martha calls it "false-alarm chili". it's an okay recipe for vegetarians who don't eat chili that often and therefore don't know what good vegetarian chili tastes like--that was me, back in
the day. since then, i have entered the world of chili cook-offs, and have learned that this recipe just doesn't cut it. i actually made it for my first chili cook-off ever, and i came in 7th out of 9! i was told by one of the judges that it "tastes like a pizza". very upsetting. i think where this recipe goes wrong is the pound of lentils-- it's just too much bulk. substitute a meat substitute or eliminate it all together, and it would be a much better chili. also, you're right about the salt. salt to taste? please. a chili requires so much salt, it's not even funny. i've never measured, but it may be as much as a 1/4 cup, who knows?
i will always love this recipe though, because from it, i was able to make the modifications needed to create an award winning chili, which i continue to perfect. see the recipe here:
